Colgate (1-1) scored three touchdowns in the second half, dealing the Big Green a loss in Dartmouth's season opener.
Colgate's Jordan Scott scored his second of three touchdowns of the game with 5:01 left in the third period and then caught a two-point conversion pass for a 14-7 advantage.
The Big Green threatened, but with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Tom Bennewitz (Weston, Conn.) rolled out of the pocket on fourth down and was sacked by Colgate's Geoff Bean.
The Raiders answered with 5:56 remaining for a 21-7 advantage. Quarterback Mike Saraceno found Brent Dillingham for the tight end's first career touchdown pass as time ran out on a Big Green comeback.
Colgate added an insurance score with 3:10 remaining when Scott bulled in from seven yards out. That was set up by Bean's fumble recovery after a Dartmouth exchange was bobbled.
"Obviously we're disappointed," said Dartmouth head coach Buddy Teevens. "We played well enough to be in a position to answer. We didn't convert some plays when we needed to and that's the bottom line."
Dartmouth took a 7-6 lead into the halftime break, after spotting the Raiders a 6-0 start. On its first play from scrimmage, Colgate used a 65-yard touchdown run by Scott for the early jump with 4:45 gone in the first quarter. The point after attempt failed.
Midway through the second period, the Big Green completed a 53-yard drive for its first points of the day. Sophomore Milan Williams (Mobile, Ala.) capped off the nine-play series with a one-yard run and junior Andrew Kempler (Westport, Conn.) connected on the PAT for a 7-6 advantage.
For the Big Green, junior strong safety Ian Wilson (Burbank, Calif.) had one sack, nine solo tackles and two assists. Offensively, senior wide receiver Ryan Fuselier (Escondido, Calif.) caught six balls for 64 yards. At quarterback, Bennewitz completed 14 of 22 passes for 102 yards and senior Mike Fritz (Houston, Texas) also saw some time in relief, completing two of five passes for 14 yards.
The Big Green has its home opener on Saturday, September 23, hosting the No. 1 New Hampshire Wildcats in a 12 noon start. The game will be televised by WMUR-TV, Manchester, N.H.
