Berkeley, Calif. - After a disappointing loss to host Cal on Friday the Dartmouth men's soccer team bounced back to take a 1-0 win over national power Stanford on the last day of the adidas/Cal Legacy Classic. Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) notched the lone goal of the day to lift Dartmouth to victory, giving the Big Green a 2-2-2 overall record.
"This was a great win for our program," said head coach Jeff Cook. "The potential for this team remains high and we really came together on this trip."
Dartmouth placed second overall while The Cardinal finished third in the weekend's tournament, hosted by champion California with Sacramento State fourth.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie after a hard fought 40 minutes. Dartmouth held a 7-3 edge in shot attempts as both teams battled evenly for the majority of the game. Both sides continued to play well defensively through much of the second. Dartmouth was able to get on the scoreboard at the 76:28 mark, as Henderson corralled a ball that was deflected by Stanford freshman goalkeeper John Moore. Henderson's shot from 16 yards out was on target, giving the Big Green a 1-0 win.
"This was our best performance of the season," Cook said. "This was a great win and a great way to come back from such a heartbreaking loss to Cal on Friday. We played well and we were able to really generate offensively which greated momentum and gave us confidence.
Big Green sophomore Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) played his first game in goal of 2006 earning his second career shutout. Brian Lappas (Hillsborough, N.C.), Tom Lobben (Glen Head, N.Y. ) and Henderson were named to the all-tournament team.
Dartmouth opens Ivy Leauge play with a game against Brown on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
