Hanover, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Ivy League rival Brown in the conference opener for both squads. Rookie standout Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) scored his second goal of the season in the spirited contest. This was Dartmouth's third double-overtime tie of the season as it moved to 2-2-3 overall (0-0-1 Ivy) while Brown became 5-1-1 (0-0-1 Ivy).
"I am proud of our players. They gave all they had and our substitutes contributed to the effort well. The first half of the game was the best we have played all year. Brown is a great team and we thoroughly controlled that half," reflected Head Coach Jeff Cook.
The Big Green began its Ivy title defense in much the same manner that it won the championship in 2005. Last season, the squads played to a 2-2 double-overtime stalemate in the last game of the season, giving Dartmouth an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Dartmouth took control early in the game, out-shooting Brown 13-4 in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net. Things evened out early in the second as the game emerged into a hotly-contested battle in the midfield.
Keat gave Dartmouth a 1-0 edge at 59:44 when he snagged a cross from junior Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.), finishing with a beautiful bicycle kick from 12 yards out. "You won't see a better goal than that in any level of soccer," noted Cook.
Brown did not waste much time after that, answering Keat's goal with a close header by Dylan Sheehan off a cross from Brian Joyce to even it up at 63:30.
"We didn't handle the lead well, we got too excited. From that point on, the game looked like a draw," said Cook.
Both squads continued to battle hard through the damp and humid conditions. Brown took some more control in the second half, out-shooting Dartmouth 11-6 during the period. The Big Green survived a major threat from the Bears with 15:00 remaining in the contest, as the Dartmouth defense finally cleared the ball after a skurmish in front of the goal.
The game remained fairly even throughout the overtime periods, with each team having several chances to convert. Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Rowan Anders (Qualicam Beach, B.C.) made three of his seven total saves in extra time.
The Big Green held a slight advantage in shots with 21 to the Bears' 19. Jarrett Leech had eight saves in goal for the visitors.
The Dartmouth men will be back in action again on Tuesday when they head to Fairfield for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
