Fairfield, Conn. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team (2-3-3) dropped a hotly contested battle to Fairfield, 2-1 in overtime tonight. This marked the Big Green's fourth overtime contest of the season. Coming into today's game, Fairfield (4-2-1) was ranked second in the NSCAA North Atlantic region poll.
The Big Green wasted little time getting on the board, as rookie Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) scored his third goal of the season in just the second minute of the contest (1:42). Senior Mark Limpert (Elizabethtown, Pa.) recorded the assist on Keat's tally.
Fairfield would not back down easily, evening the score just four minutes later when Alex Cunliffe beat sophomore goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) to the right side on a free kick.
The Big Green held control of possession for the next 20 minutes, taking four consecutive shots before the Stags evened it up with a few attempts of their own to round out the half.
The second half proved an exciting back-and-forth, physical battle between the two squads. Dartmouth took seven shots, all on goal, while Fairfield also had six shots on goal to its credit. The Big Green had six corner kick opportunities, but was unable to convert for a goal. After a raucous half, the game remained undecided at 1-1, forcing overtime.
Fairfield was quick on the draw in the extra time, as Aldo Hope scored in just the 92nd minute to seal the victory.
Both goalkeepers gave valiant efforts with Milligan finishing with eight saves in his third career start and Fairfield's Jon Paul Francini making 10 stops.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Saturday when it heads to Princeton for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off.
