NEW YORK, N.Y. – Dartmouth men's soccer traveled to the Big Apple for a match with the Columbia Lions on Saturday, looking for their first win in conference play.
The Big Green got one goal in each half and despite being a man down, allowed just one goal and four shots on goal to defeat Columbia, 2-1. With the win, Dartmouth moves to 2-4-3 overall and 1-2 in Ivy League play.
Dartmouth and Columbia played a balanced first half, each recording three shots and trading scoring chances. The Big Green were able to capitalize first, as
Ben Bilden scored his first career goal to put his team up 1-0.
James Wilson sent a cross into the box that landed perfectly on the head of Bilden, who poked it beyond the diving Lions' keeper.
The Big Green held onto their 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Lions pressured early in the second half, scoring the equalizer just a minute and 14 seconds into the second half.
In the 57
th minute, Dartmouth pulled ahead.
Olly Spicer and
Eidur Baldvinsson traded passes outside the box before Spicer snuck the ball back to Baldvinsson who one touched it into the net to regive Dartmouth the lead.
Shortly after,
Alexis Huneau was dealt a red card, forcing Dartmouth to play down a man for the rest of the game. The Lions tried to take advantage, tallying eight total shots, two on net, but were not able to pull even as the Big Green held strong defensively to earn the 2-1 victory, their first win in Ivy League play this season.
This is the first time Dartmouth has defeated the Lions since 2022, with the two teams playing to draws in the last two matchups. The Big Green earned their first win over Columbia on the road since 2016.
