Statistically, the Dartmouth men's basketball program and its players have been among the nation's leaders in numerous categories, and on three occasions, the Big Green has been No. 1 in an NCAA statistical category. A fourth time, the National Basketball Hall of Fame recognized a Dartmouth player as the top 3-point shooter in the nation.
Dartmouth's all-time leading scorer with 2,158 points, Barton led all of NCAA Division 1 as a freshman in free throw percentage. He missed only four times during the 1985-86 season, making 65 of 69 attempts, or 94.2 percent. That also continues to stand as an NCAA freshman record.
By averaging 7.8 assists per game during the 1996-97 season, Mitchell led the nation. In 26 games on the year, he had a total of 203 assists -- the Dartmouth single season record. He finished ahead of Stanford's Brevin Knight, now with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. With 70 steals that same year, Mitchell holds another Dartmouth record.
His sophomore season, McGinnis averaged 12.2 rebounds per game, the best in the entire nation. He grabbed a total of 317 boards in 27 games, showing that at 6-8, height isn't everything. McGinnis became the first Big Green player in 38 years to average double figures in rebounding.
Although it isn't an official NCAA category, the top male 3-point shooter in the nation is honored annually by the National Basketball Hall of Fame. As a sophomore, Buth was presented the Edward S. Steitz Award after connecting on 83 of 178 (46.6) beyond the arc. The runner-up that year was Duke's Trajan Langdon. As a result of his accomplishment, Buth was recognized at a dinner in Springfield, Mass. and his jersey was displayed at the Basketball Hall of Fame during the 1999-2000 season.
The NCAA men's basketball record book has an entry for "Number of Different Players to Score a 3-Point Field Goal, One Team." At Boston College on November 30, 1993, nine Big Green players connected on at least one 3-pointer. When Baron Carlson '96 hit a trey at the buzzer, that vaulted Dartmouth into the NCAA record book.
