Costa Rica Day 2
We woke up around 7 am Wednesday morning, ate some breakfast, then met up with Hector and Tio around 8. The plan for the morning was to head to La Paz Waterfall Garden on the slopes of Volcano Poas. The hour-long ride up the winding slopes gave us some great views of the Costa Rican country side. Hector pointed out to us the many coffee bean fields lining the sides of the volcano. Because of the fertile volcanic soil on these slopes, the coffee bean plants grow in abundance which makes the coffee bean one of Costa Rica's most lucrative crops. We were able to pull off the road and see these plants close up, and we also had the chance to taste and purchase some of the Costa Rican coffee. The team agreed that it was the best coffee we've ever had. A cup of coffee cost us about 500 colones, or about a dollar, so it was an okay deal. A local farmer had his oxen by the road, so Coach Deffebaugh and
Johnathan Ball overcame their fear of livestock to snap a quick picture with the beasts; it cost them 500 colones, though.
We continued further up the volcano, at one point on the continental divide, and reached La Paz. La Paz is a small nature reserve on the mountain with various wildlife exhibits displaying the local flora and fauna. There was a large indoor butterfly garden, dozens of hummingbird feeders where many hummingbirds gathered, a snake exhibit, where many of the Big Green overcame their fear of caged snakes, a frog house and four enormous waterfalls. Basically the waterfalls were the hit of the day. Costa Rica was the setting for many of the nature shots in Jurassic Park, including the scene with the helicopter in front of the waterfalls, so you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of site this was for us. In the words of
Michael Giovacchini, "The waterfalls were sick." Right you are, Michael. After that, we packed up the bus and headed back to San Jose. Most of us slept on the bus ride back, but Coach Hurd had his nose stuck in his translation book studying up on his Spanish, supposedly to better communicate with the women of Costa Rica.

At night we took on Team Escozu, a very scrappy local semi-professional team. We started out slow but we eventually took control of the game and came away with an 88-55 victory. Everyone on the team got quality playing time and played pretty hard.
Leon Pattman was our leading scorer with 26 points, while
DeVon Mosley scored 12. Coach Dunn was pleased with our effort but we're obviously looking to improve on things tomorrow.
