"'Round the girdled earth they roam..."
We had a pleasant surprise tonight when we took on Seminario at the National Gymnasium. John McPhaul '78 was in attendance for the game. Mr. McPhaul was born in Costa Rica, moved to California at an early age, and then attended Dartmouth. He has since moved back to Costa Rica as a correspondent for Reuters. It's always a pleasure, no matter where we go, to see Dartmouth grads.
Our opponent, Seminario, is a semi-professional team in the same league as Escozu. They were a much more experienced than our opponent from the previous night. After a slow start for both teams, we held Seminario 10 minutes without a basket, and the game was in our control from that point on. Our defense set the tone for the game which all started with
DeVon Mosley,
Michael Giovacchini and
Marlon Sanders pressuring their point guards, causing much confusion in Seminario's offense. The final score was Dartmouth 71, Seminario 36. Many of our players were in double digits, but I am not sure of the official stats.
However, basketball was not the only activity on tap for the day. We woke up early and Tio drove us up Poas Volcano to the Poas Canopy Tour. This tourist attraction was equipped with 15 zip lines situated in the canopy of the jungle on Poas Volcano. It was an exhilarating experience. Not only were we hanging hundreds of feet above the vegetation below but at one point we were traveling 60 mph down the 1/4 mile long zip line to the platform at the bottom of the valley. We all caught on pretty well, but Coach Dunn had some trouble letting go of the rope, which resulted in him getting stuck in the middle of a 500-foot zip line. On the other end of the spectrum, Coach Berry was our genuine dare devil and refrained from using the brakes. On the second-to-last line we were directly instructed to use our brakes because the zip line was much faster than the other lines on which we had already been. "No Brakes Berry" blatantly disregarded this command and came barreling into the platform. He took out the man working the platform, almost knocked a few players off the platform and head-butted the tree at the end of the platform.

Not everyone was able to go on the canopy tour, however. The few guys who chose not to hang 100 feet in the air above the jungle, enjoyed a safer and more relaxing activity in fishing for trout. Marlon used his skills from fishing the Cuyahoga to pull home some impressive fish.
The highlight of the day had to be after our game. A few of us decided to head back to the hotel to grab some food. There was a large reception of some sort taking place during our dinner, and the many people were dancing, and singing karaoke. If you know
Adam Powers, you know that this is his element. He lit up the night with a rousing rendition of "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira.
Once again we had a great day, and we're looking forward to another invigorating day tomorrow.
