Dartmouth Men's Basketball
Costa Rica Day Four
We didn't have much tourism on the docket today, but we did have a full day of basketball.
In the morning we took on Douglas College from British Columbia in front of about a thousand high school students from Colegio Claretiano, a local high school. Douglas was much more talented than our previous opponents. Along with the tougher competition, the arena presented a challenge as well. The gym was open-air with a cement surface, and the roof leaked. Because of the faulty roofing, and the torrential downpour during our game, there were many puddles on the floor. To put all excuses aside, we played pretty badly and had many turnovers. Douglas College played well, which lead to Douglas leading by four with two minutes to go. After a couple of defensive stops we had tied the game with only 15 seconds left, then John Ball applied much pressure to his man and got the steal. He drove down the court, got the three-point play, and we ended up taking the win by three points, 59-56. The game was much closer than we expected, but we got the win.
Alex Barnett supplied a lot of energy off the bench, which sparked a lot of our defensive intensity, and helped us secure the win.
After the game we were inundated with a crowd of high school students. I guess you could say we were finally able to experience our 15 minutes of fame. However, one of our teammates was treated almost like royalty. For some reason
Dan Biber was the highlight of the game for the hundreds of young "chicas" that attended our game. I don't know if it was his long dark hair, his dark piercing eyes, or the fact that he looks like Ashton Kutcher, but for some reason the 16, and 17-year-old girls could not get enough of Biber. We had lunch in the cafeteria of the school and Biber continued to field the many requests from the infatuated girls. They asked for pictures, his shirt, his hat, his shoes and his heart, but Dan was able to keep composed. He obviously loved the attention but we needed to head on to our next activity. After an hour of signing autographs and taking pictures, we were able to head back to the hotel to rest up for our evening game.
We took on the Santa Ana Coyotes in the evening. They presented less of a challenge than Douglas, but they were not a pushover. We started the game fairly slow but we were able to blow the game open in the second half. Alex supplied the crowd with many spectacular dunks.
Jarrett Mathis,
Michael Giovacchini and I dunked a few times in warm-ups, but it was nothing like Barnett's windmill during the game. Jarrett and Brian McMillan were solid on the inside, which opened up the outside shot for the rest of us. We ended up winning the game, 72-42.

Although we weren't the tourists that we were the days before, we were able to get two solid wins. Tomorrow we take on the University of Costa Rica and look to improve our record in Central America to 4-0.
