Dartmouth is truly a national institution and the Big Green's athletic teams are showcased annually coast-to-coast and internationally under NCAA rules. Intersectional games offer the chance for Dartmouth players to experience different parts of the country. Playing in far-away arenas offers alumni and potential student-athletes the opportunity to see Dartmouth basketball first-hand.
The Dartmouth men's basketball team has enjoyed trips throughout the nation and abroad during past seasons, with competition and camaraderie foremost on the itinerary. This year's schedule features a to trip the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Last season, the Big Green traveled to Lawrence, Kans., to meet Kansas in the historic Phog Allen Field House.
A return visit to New Mexico's Pit, followed by a stop at Colorado's Coors Events/Conference Center was the intersection trip in 2005-06. In 2004, Dartmouth journeyed to Maples Pavilion, home of the Stanford Cardinal.
That followed Dartmouth's return trip to Hawaii for a three-game tournament in Hilo. The Big Green's trip to the Aloha State in 1987 was the first by any Dartmouth team. After the 2003 Christmas holiday, Dartmouth traveled to Ohio State, giving several players the chance to perform in front of family and friends. In 2002-03, the Big Green's first-ever trip to Furman University in Greenville, S.C. was a success as Dartmouth won the Poinsettia Holiday Classic.
Dartmouth also is a regular at the University of New Mexico's “Pit,” having made three previous trips to Albuquerque. In 2000, Greg Buth '01 enjoyed a homecoming at the University of Minnesota. During 1999-2000, the Big Green traveled to the West Coast, where Flinder Boyd '02 played in front of family and friends, and in 1998-99, Dartmouth traveled to the Universities of Denver and Wyoming as well as the U.S. Air Force Academy as many parents were able to watch their sons play. In 1997-98, the trips were to Notre Dame and Wisconsin-Green Bay. In 1996, the Big Green headed to Middle America for the Toledo MVP Classic, and in 1995, Dartmouth played North Carolina at the Dean Dome (the Tarheels came to Dartmouth in 1998). A 1995-96 trip to Rice University gave Texans Jacob Capps '96 and Sea Lonergan '97 the chance to play in front of family and friends. During the 1993-94 season, the Big Green traveled to Iowa a second time, matching up against the Big Ten's Hawkeyes.
During 1992-93, Dartmouth traveled to Cajun Country, competing at the New Orleans Classic, before heading to the Pacific Northwest to face the Universities of Washington and Portland.
The men's basketball team twice has traveled to Florida to match-up against the University of Miami and has also faced Cal-Berkeley, Wisconsin, Memphis State, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Richmond.
The Big Green has traveled extensively to many of the nation's most recognized basketball arenas, including North Carolina's Dean Dome and the Pit at New Mexico. In 2004, Dartmouth played in the newly renovated Maples Pavilion at Stanford, a year after the Big Green appeared in the impressive Schottenstein Center at Ohio State. Recently, the squad traveled to Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota for a December match-up against the Big Ten. During the 1999-2000 season, Dartmouth visited Virginia's University Hall, and earlier that year, the Big Green made stops in California, including Gersten Pavilion at Loyola Marymount.
But no matter how far Dartmouth travels, Leede Arena remains the home of Big Green basketball, where there's always time to sign an autograph or greet some young fans. Nationally ranked teams have visited Leede, including North Carolina and Virginia of the ACC. (Photos by Kathy Slattery Phillips and Mark Washburn)
Dartmouth Coast-to-Coast
A truly national college, Dartmouth has students from all 50 states as well as many foreign countries. The U.S. map helps illustrate the scope of the Dartmouth basketball program. The shaded states are those in which Dartmouth has played in recent years. From 1998-2002, the Big Green had one foreign student on the team: Vedad Osmanovic '02 from Banja Luka, Bosnia, who is now an American citizen.
