CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team opened up Ivy play for the 2006 season against the Harvard Crimson at the Malkin Athletic Center Friday night. Despite outhitting the Crimson the Big Green were unable to come from behind as Harvard won 3-1. With the loss Dartmouth falls to 3-4 on the season, 0-1 Ivy while Harvard improves to 3-5, 1-0.
Harvard took the first game, 30-26, but fell behind in the second game and Dartmouth took advantage to win 30-25. The Crimson won the next two sets, 30-27.
In what became the deciding game, the Crimson opened up a 16-9 lead, but Dartmouth threatened pulling to within 20-18. Harvard did not back down and held the Big Green off to take the victory.
"Unfortunately we showed our youth tonight," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We were in every game but we did not play the big points well. We did some things okay but not enough to win. This was a hard loss to take. I was very pleased with the way Jess Thomas played and our middle was great on the attack."
Dartmouth's Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) had a double-double leading all scorers with a game high 26 kills while hitting .299. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) had 49 assists and five players recorded double-digit digs. The Big Green outhit the Crimson in every game but one.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow, continuing at Harvard with a 1:00 pm match against Maine.
