HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team, frustrated after two losses last weekend, earned its first win of 2006 with a 1-0 defeat of Maryland. The Big Green dominated the Terrapins in every aspect of the game with a terrific all-around performance. Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) earned her first collegiate goal with a strike midway through the first half. With the win the Big Green improve to 1-2-0 while Maryland falls to 2-2-1.
Dartmouth outshot Maryland 22-7 with 15 solid shots on net. The Terrapins struggled to create and convert on its scoring chances. For the Big Green Goldstein's goal came in the 36th minute of play. Becky Poskin (Southborough, Mass.) fed to Monica Martin de Bustamante (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) who faked out the Maryland back. de Bustamante then fed up to Goldstein on a pass from the left side of the box with the freshman shooting into the upper right corner above the outstretched Terrapin goalie.
Maryland mustered two scoring opportunities back to back at the 13th minute in the second half. A hit ball off the crossbar and a kick that went just a little high were all the chances the Terps could get in the 90 minutes.
Maryland goalie Nikki Resnick kept the Terrapins in the game by saving 14 Dartmouth shots while Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) recorded two saves for the Big Green. Dartmouth also finished the game with an advantage in corner kicks, 9-1.
The game marks just the second team Maryland and Dartmouth have played with the Big Green avenging a defeat in 1997.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday as Central Connecticut travels to Hanover. The two teams will meet at 1:00 pm at Chase Field.
