HANOVER, N.H. ? Junior guard Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa) came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points as Dartmouth defeated Colgate, 68-48, this evening at Leede Arena. All 10 available players saw action for the Big Green in the team effort.
The Big Green improved to 4-8 on the season while the Raiders dropped to 1-14 overall. It marked Dartmouth's third game in the last five days and second consecutive victory.
The Raiders jumped out to an early 5-0 lead which they extended to a 10-5 margin at the 15:36 mark. Their success would be short-lived as the Big Green went on a 22-3 run, started and ended by senior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.), to go up 27-13 at 3:59. The squads traded buckets for the balance of the half and a buzzer-beater by Colgate's Tahara Williams took it to 33-19 at the break.
Dartmouth gave up a few buckets in the early part of the second half, but Colgate never cut the lead to single digits. Back-to-back jumpers by Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) and a bucket by Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas) put the Big Green up 51-28 at 12:11.
Head Coach Chris Wielgus substituted freely throughout the half and the Big Green didn't miss a beat, going up by as many as 24 points late in the half.
Craft finished the game with 14 points (on 7-of-10 shooting) and five assists, both career bests. Taylor had 12 points in 21 minutes of action while Rose added 11 points and seven rebounds. Rookie Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds to lead Dartmouth to a 42-27 advantage on the glass.
Dartmouth shot 49.2 percent for the game and held Colgate to just 33.9 percent shooting.
The Big Green is back in action at Leede Arena on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when it hosts Harvard in its Ivy League opener.
Other Notes: Freshmen Nikki Owusu Brackett (Houston, Texas), Michelle Meyer (Covington, Ohio) and Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) all saw the most minutes of their young careers tonight. Brackett played two minutes and scored her first collegiate points while Meyer and Williams played six and 13 minutes, respectively.
