HANOVER, N.H. - The Harvard Crimson (3-11/1-0 Ivy) overcame a 16-point Dartmouth (4-9/0-1 Ivy) lead to knock off the defending Ivy Champs, 71-68 this afternoon at Leede Arena.
Senior guard Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) led Dartmouth with 22 points, four steals and three assists.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the early going, with the score knotted at 13-13 at 11:40. A pair of key defensive stops sparked the Big Green offense to a 24-17 lead at 7:33, after baskets by five different players.
Liz Tindal hit a jumper to pull Harvard within five, but Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) hit a layup to start a 12-2 Dartmouth run to close out the half. Hot-shooting sophomore guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) nailed a triple to end scoring for the period with the Big Green up 36-22.
Dartmouth had forced 15 first half turnovers by Harvard and would have hoped to put the game away early in the second. The Crimson, however, had other ideas.
Harvard slowly chipped away at the Dartmouth lead in the opening minutes of the second half, using an early 13-5 run to cut the Big Green's lead to single digits. Dartmouth kept its rivals at bay, up 51-42 at 12:23 thanks to a pair of made free throws by Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa).
The Crimson stormed back with a 10-3 run to close the gap and eventually took its first lead of the day with just under five minutes remaining, up 59-58.
The Big Green struggled to get the ball to its key players late in the game and trailed by as many as five points, down 67-62 with just over a minute left in regulation.
Harvard did not miss a single shot in the final three minutes and despite a pair of heroic triples by Taylor and Schram, Dartmouth could not make up the deficit.
Lindsay Hallion hit a pair of free-throws with eight seconds left to seal the 71-68 win for Harvard.
Taylor was joined in double-figures by Schram with 13 and Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas), who has 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore center Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds while Scott finished with nine points and nine boards.
Hallion led the Crimson with 22 points while the 6'7" Emma Moretzsohn was successful inside, posting 12 points and five boards.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to in-state rival New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
