Providence, R.I. ? After a back-and-forth opening 30 minutes, the Dartmouth women's basketball team took control late to earn a 61-44 win over Brown this evening.
Dartmouth improves to 7-9 (1-1 Ivy) while Brown falls to 3-14 (1-2 Ivy). The Big Green matched its season low for points allowed after also holding Holy Cross to 44 points in its previous game.
The Big Green came out strong in the first, opening on a 10-0 run thanks to eight points by Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas). Brown did not score its first point until Catherine Schaper hit a free-throw at 12:44. Dartmouth kept it going on both ends of the court, extending its lead to 20-7 after a Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) triple at the 4:36 mark.
The Bears heated up late in the half to close on 9-2 run, cutting the Big Green lead to 22-16 at the break.
Dartmouth shot 38.5 percent from the field for the half and held Brown to a woeful 22.6 percent, but had nine costly turnovers. The Bears managed to hold senior sensation Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) scoreless for the period.
Brown opened the second solid, cutting the Dartmouth lead to 22-20 in the early goings. Then Taylor, Dartmouth's career free-throws leader, scored her first points in fitting fashion by hitting a pair from the charity stripe.
Stifling defense led to crisp offense as the Big Green went on a 12-0 run started with a bucket by Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) at 14:08. Dartmouth extended its lead to 46-24 at the 11:06 mark.
The Bears got going on a 7-0 run to cut the Big Green lead to 46-31 after a triple by Megan McCahill. The Big Green answered with six unanswered points to keep a comfortable lead which it held for the balance of the game. Dartmouth shot 11-of-12 from the free-throw line in the last five minutes to ice the win.
Dartmouth had four players in double figures led by Kamara with 12. Despite scoring below her season average with nine points, Taylor played a solid game with nine boards, six assists, five steals and two blocks. The Big Green shot 42.3 percent from the floor while holding the Bears to 28.3 percent shooting. Dartmouth is now 7-0 when shooting 40 percent or better.
For the second consecutive game, every available Dartmouth player saw action in the contest.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow when it plays at Yale at 7:00 p.m.
