Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team's stout defense allowed just five shots on goal by 12th ranked Boston College, but a timely header off a free kick in the 86th minute gave the Eagles the win in a hotly contested battle.
The Eagles move to 9-3-1 with the win while the Big Green drops to 8-3-2.
“We're disappointed to come away with a loss but having said that, Boston College is an outstanding team,” said Head Coach Jeff Cook. “We played very well first half created good opportunities to score but the second half became a more even game,”
Boston College's Alejandro Bedoya drew a foul deep in the Dartmouth corner late in the game and Reuben Ayarna stepped in to take the free kick. Ayarna sent a booming ball into the box where Sherron Manswell connected on a header at 85:37 to seal the win for the Eagles.
Prior to that, the squads played an evenly-matched game, with each team taking 12 shots and Dartmouth holding a slight 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Big Green used three corner kicks and eight shots in the first half to create most of its scoring opportunities, before settling into a more even pace in the second half. Overall, Dartmouth had six corners to BC's three.
In addition to hitting the post in the second half, Boston goalkeeper Chris Brown was the bane of Dartmouth's existence with an impressive six saves in goal. Big Green goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) had three saves including one on a Manswell header in the 68th minute.
Dani Rothenberg (Atlanta, Ga.) and Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.) paced the Big Green with two shots on goal each.
“Overall we will take the positives from this performance it should put us in a good frame of mind for Saturday's game at Harvard.”
Dartmouth takes its act on the road again this Saturday when it heads to 13th ranked Harvard for a critical Ivy League battle at 1:30 p.m.
