Cambridge, Mass. - The Dartmouth men's soccer team remained in the Ivy
Championship hunt with a 1-0 shutout of Ivy rival and 12th ranked Harvard today at Ohiri Field.
The Big Green moves to 9-3-2, 3-0-1 Ivy while the Crimson is now 9-3-2, 2-2 Ivy.
The Crimson attacked early and Big Green junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) helped his team turn the corner when he made a save on an attempt by Harvard's Michael Fucito, who has eight goals on the season.
After a slow start offensively Dartmouth, junior forward Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) picked up feed from classmate Dani Rothenberg (Atlanta, Ga.), made a nice spin move in the box and scored at 30:34 to give the Green the lead for good.
“I am thrilled for our players because they worked extremely hard for this win today,” said Head Coach Jeff Cook. “I thought the first 20 minutes we were tentative and well aware of Harvard's attacking threats but we picked it up and Craig gave us a boost with his goal.”
Dartmouth went on to out-shoot Harvard 9-6 for the first half and 15-13 for the game. The Big Green also held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks thanks to an aggressive attack.
Milligan turned back all four of Harvard's shots on goal while Adam Hahn had five saves for the Crimson.
The Big Green's defense stifled the Crimson's potent offense and stopped sophomore Andre Akpan's 10-game scoring streak. As a team, Harvard had scored 30 goals in 13 games prior to today.
“We knew we would have to defend well to keep it level today and our back four and Milligan did a tremendous job,” said Cook.
Dartmouth returns home next week to host Cornell at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 3 at Burnham Field.
