Hanover, N.H. ? The 23rd ranked Dartmouth men's soccer team kept its Ivy title hopes alive with a big 3-1 win over Cornell at Burnham Field tonight.
Three different players scored for the Big Green, who improved to 10-3-2, 4-0-1 Ivy while the Big Red dropped to 5-8-1, 0-4-1 Ivy.
Dartmouth struck early on - just 47 seconds into the game - when senior Nick Christman (Falmouth, Mass.) sent a beautiful hooking shot into the top right corner of the goal from the left side off a cross from Matt Carroll (N. Andover, Mass.).
The Big Green kept the pressure on and Christman was at it again when he sent a perfectly placed corner kick into the box where freshman back Bryan Giudicelli (Emerald Hills, Calif.) headed in his first collegiate goal in the 25th minute.
Cornell turned it up before halftime and worked in a goal in the 36th minute when Brian Kuritzky got airborne to catch a cross from Matt Bouraee for a nice goal from the right side to the top left corner of the net.
Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead and an 11-5 advantage in shots into halftime.
The Big Green picked up right where it left off in the second half, capitalizing on an early corner kick. Sophomore Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) sent a booming cross into the box and junior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) took a shot that was deflected for Dani Rothenberg (Atlanta, Ga.) to hammer home in the 54th minute.
Rothenberg's goal was all the insurance and momentum that Dartmouth would need as the team dominated the half with a 7-1 shot advantage to make it 18-6 for the game.
"I am delighted with how our players handled this game," said Head Coach Jeff Cook. "Cornell is a well coached team and we knew that no matter what happened they were going to give us a strong game. When they scored to make it 2-1 they put us under pressure but we responded well with a strong second half."
Cornell goalkeeper Luca Cerrentani was impressive despite the loss, making eight saves under constant pressure by the Big Green attack. Dartmouth junior Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) made two saves and combined with senior Justin Schwarz (Newburgh, N.Y.) for the win in goal.
The Big Green heads to Providence next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. for a showdown with Brown in a game that could decide the Ivy champion.
