WORCESTER, Mass. - The Dartmouth field hockey team finished a three-game road trip with a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross as the Big Green held off the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. The Big Green completed the road trip with a 2-1 mark.
Dartmouth (6-10, 1-5 Ivy) got on the board first at the 25:45 mark of the opening half, on a goal from junior Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.). Hines got a pass from classmate Stef Miller (South Plainfield, N.J.) and fired a high shot from the right side for her seventh goal of the season and second in as many games.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next 50 minutes of play, until senior Lizzie Bildner (Manchester, Mass.) gave the Big Green an important insurance goal with 9:25 remaining in the game. Bildner was able to control the ball in a scramble infront and pushed it by Holy Cross goaltender Erin Singleton for the 2-0 lead. It was Bildner's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Holy Cross (6-13) got to within a goal two minutes later as Courtney Callahan received a nice pass from Sara O'Coin and tipped it inside the right post for the score.
The Big Green held on thanks to nine saves from senior netminder Ashley Heist (Byrn Mawr, Pa.), while Singleton and Kelly Casey combined to make seven saves for the Crusaders.
The teams were even in shots taken with 11 apiece, with Holy Cross holding an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Dartmouth will be back in action at Scully Fahey Field this coming Saturday, November 3, as the Big Green faces Ivy League foe Cornell on Senior Day, beginning at 12 noon.
