Durham, N.H. - Dartmouth goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) made 10 saves but it was not enough as New Hampshire slipped one past him to take a 1-0 victory tonight.
The Wildcats out-shot the Big Green 15-6 and Milligan's brilliant performance kept his team in the game despite Dartmouth's lack of offense. Dartmouth fell to 6-2-1, snapping its seven-game unbeaten streak, while New Hampshire improved to 3-3-3.
“We are disappointed with our performance but give credit to UNH for playing a competitive, uptempo game and they deserved the victory,” said Head Coach Jeff Cook. “They put us under pressure early and Sean certainly responded well to give us a chance to stay in the game.”
Six of Milligan's saves came in the first half, when UNH held a 10-3 shot advantage, but the game remained scoreless at the halftime break.
New Hampshire broke the stalemate early in the second half with a two on one play when A.J. Dubois sent a pass in from the left side for Chris Banks to slide in near the right post in the 53rd minute of play. The second would play out more evenly than the first as the Wildcats took just five shots to the Big Green's three. However, Dartmouth was unable to find the back of the net.
Freshman Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) had the Big Green's lone shot on goal which was saved by UNH goalkeeper Mike Jenne late in the second half, his only save of the night.
The Wildcats also held Dartmouth junior striker Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) at bay, as he did not get a shot off all game.
UNH held a five to two advantage in corner kicks while Dartmouth was whistled for 11 fouls to New Hampshire's four.
Dartmouth will look to right the ship on Saturday when it takes on Yale in its Ivy opener at 4:30 p.m. in New Haven. Cook is confident that his team will be ready for the challenge, noting, “we have a lot of belief in this team and we will be ready to play on Saturday at Yale.”
