NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? The Dartmouth defense held Yale's star running back Mike McLeod below his per-game rushing average, but that wasn't enough as the Bulldogs posted a 50-10 victory over the Big Green in a battle between undefeated Ivy League teams.

McLeod rushed for 155 yards (his average was 188) and one touchdown, but turnovers and a lack of offensive production proved costly for Dartmouth.

"Very disappointing," said Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens. "We came down with higher expectations. We certainly have great respect for Yale -- they are a good football team. Our goal was to limit their opportunities on the offensive side of the ball, which we didn't do. To execute cleanly on special teams which we didn't do. And to control the football offensively which we didn't do.

"With all those things not going the way we planned, it made for a long afternoon," said Teevens.

No. 17/18 Yale (4-0 overall, 2-0 Ivy) burst out of the blocks for a 19-0 lead after one period. Alan Kimball booted a 30-yard field goal, quarterback Matt Polhemus scrambled for a 21-yard TD run, and after a safety, John Sheffield grabbed a 10-yard pass from Polhemus.

With 49 seconds left in the second quarter, Dartmouth senior Andrew Kempler (Westport, Conn.) kicked a 20-yard field goal to get the Big Green on the board, 19-3, but Yale quickly answered with a 27-yard kick by Kimball for a 22-3 lead at halftime.

Dartmouth's only touchdown of the game was courtesy of the defense. With 10:12 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore Pete Pidermann (Hialeah, Fla.) blocked a punt and sophomore Zech Glaize (Fairburn, Ga.) returned the ball 33 yards for the score. That got the Big Green within 36-10 before Yale scored twice in the final four minutes.

Dartmouth (1-3 overall, 1-1 Ivy) was held to 140 yards of total offense. After missing the Penn game, junior Milan Williams (Mobile, Ala.) returned to the lineup at tailback, gaining 67 yards on 14 carries. He also caught three passes for 17 yards.

Big Green linebacker Justin Cottrell (Somers Point, N.J.) had 16 tackles, including nine solo.

Next Saturday, Dartmouth has its final non-conference game of the season, traveling to Holy Cross.
