HANOVER, N.H. - In a high-scoring wild affair in Thompson Arena on Saturday, Rensselaer (6-3-2, 1-1-2 ECAC) scored two goals in the first, three in the second and two more in the third to take a 7-4 win over the Dartmouth (3-2, 2-2 ECAC) men's hockey team. The victory is RPI's first over the Big Green since the 2001-02 season
Dartmouth got on the board quickly, just 21 seconds into the game as freshman
Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) had two shots on net with
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) there to bury it.
RPI tied the game on just its second power play goal of the season at 5:36 when Andrei Uryadov combined with Tyler Helfrich and Chase Polacek for the score. Another Engineer goal at 7:40 gave the visitors a two-goal lead. Polacek recorded the strike with Matt Angers-Goulet and Helfrich getting the assists.
The two teams both had chances to score again. Rensselaer was the receiving end of a
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) save while
Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) on the other end dinged one off the post.
In the second frame RPI increased its lead after traffic in front of the net had Devine down on the ice allowing Uraydov to trickle one past the netminder to spot the Engineers a three-goal lead.
Another strike by Rensselaer at 15:40 had Dartmouth on its heels. With just 20 seconds gone on an RPI penalty Peter Merth stole the puck at center ice passing across to Jonathan Ornelas who shot up to Jake Morissette, allowing the senior to skate in alone on Devine for the Engineers first shorthanded goal of the season.
The Big Green got one back at 16:49 when Stephens took a hard shot that skipped across the ice with
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) there to tip it in.
Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) picked up his first collegiate assist on the goal.
The two teams looked like there were going to skate into the break with RPI holding a 4-2 lead but Angers-Goulet had other plans as he took the puck off a faceoff skating in on the Dartmouth net, shooting around the right of Devine along the top of the twine to put the visitors up 5-2.
The third period had Dartmouth firing early and often but Jordan Alford in net for RPI was up to task. The Big Green had two early power play opportunities but they resulted in just three shots on goal. Rensselaer did not record a shot until 8:21 was showing on the clock.
Though not getting many shots on net the Engineers took advantage of the ones they did get as Morissette gave his team a hefty lead at 12:53. Kurt Colling skated down with the puck, dangling it behind him to a trailing Uryadov who shot over to a waiting Morissette for RPI's sixth goal of the game.
Wyman potted his second of the game just four minutes later on a goal that had referee Joe Ross confering with the goal judge to make sure the puck crossed the line.
An empty net strike by Chase Polacek at 18:43 would end the scoring for Rensselaer but the Big Green had one more to go. With less than 17 seconds left in the game Fleming took a shot that rebounded out to Reber for the freshman's first collegiate strike.
Devine finished the game with 17 saves while Alford recorded 32. Dartmouth outshot a team for the first time this season getting 36 shots on net compared to RPI's 24. Both teams had one power play goal as the Big Green was 1-for-4 and the Engineers were 1-for-2.
Dartmouth continues at home next weekend taking on Colgate on Friday and Cornell on Saturday. Game times for both contest will be 7:00 pm.
