HANOVER, N.H. – Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) gave her fifth-career shutout performance Friday night, as the Big Green women's hockey team dominated play against Ivy League competitor Brown, 6-0, at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth controlled play straight from the opening face-off, but couldn't put a mark on the board until 14:14 of the first period. Captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) scored her team-high 27th goal of the season with assists coming to Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) and Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.), which gave the Big Green the, 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth fired 16 shots on Brown netminder Nicole Stock in the first period, but the Bears could only throw six at Clemis producing no goals.
Apps netted her second of the game early in the second stanza as she deflected a Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) shot beating Stock low to the left side. Piper was also credited with an assist. The Big Green continued their shot pouring in the second period out shooting the Bears, 15-2.
Dartmouth opened it up in the final 20 minutes as four different Big Green skaters found the back of the net.
Senior Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) led the way for the Big Green as she and Parsons moved in on Stock on a 2-on-1. Parsons drop pass found the tape of Weatherston, who one-timed it between the legs of the Bears goalie, increasing their lead to 3-0.
Piper also assisted on the play, marking her 99th career assist.
Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) added her name to the scoring column at 10:59 of the third when she took a pass from Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) to the right of the goal. The freshman took a few strides, and then flipped the puck over the shoulder of Stock into the upper corner for her 15th goal of the season.
Parsons got in on the action just two and a half minutes later as she caught a clear attempt from a Bears defender and placed the puck at her feet. She made the last defender miss on the steal, before burying her falling down effort past Stock, and giving Dartmouth a, 5-0, lead.
Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) capped off the nights scoring at 18:46, when she curled in front of the net and hammered home a shot, finishing off the Bears, 6-0.
The women will skate again tomorrow in their final regular season contest against the Bulldogs of Yale. If the Big Green prevails, they will capture the Ivy League title and have plenty of momentum carried on into the playoffs. Puck drops at 4:00 p.m.
