HANOVER, N.H. – Gillian Apps' (Unionville, Ont.) overtime goal lifted the Big Green women's hockey team past Yale, 3-2, to claim the Ivy League title today at Thompson Arena.
Both teams battled hard in the first period, each having their respective chances to get on the board. The Big Green took the slight edge in the offensive game, out shooting the Bulldogs, 11-6, in the opening period. Dartmouth's Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) and Yale's Shivon Zilis denied all opposing chances, leaving the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.
The Big Green kicked off the second frame with a shorthanded goal at 2:49. After Apps was sent to the sin bin for body checking, Dartmouth found themselves playing one-man down for the first time of the day. Sophomore Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) stole the puck from the Bulldog defense on the fore check, and slung a shot toward the cage. The hard on-ice shot banged off the back of Zilis and fell over the goal line.
The Bulldogs answered right back with a special teams goal of their own. Taking advantage of a power play, Crysti Howser took a pass from Berit Johnson and one-timed a shot low to the right side of the net, evening the game at ones.
After two periods, Dartmouth had out shot the Bulldogs, 28-8, but were still tied with their Ivy League foe.
Yale took the lead at 2:44 of the final period, when Helen Resor and Kristin Savard moved into the Big Green zone on a 2-on-1. It was Resor who buried the shot past Clemis with the Bulldogs shorthanded. The goal was Resors fifth of the season.
But three minutes later, Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) tied the score again for the Big Green. The sophomore planted herself in front of the Yale net, as Bowman fished out the puck from behind the net. She slid a pass out to Kennedy, who wasted no time blasting a shot past Zilis, tying the game at two apiece.
Seventeen Dartmouth shots later, the Big Green found themselves heading into overtime for the fourth time this season.
Apps, who finished off St. Lawrence in extra time back on January 27th, capped of another memorable game in Thompson Arena.
Controlling the puck in the Yale zone, Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) made a swift pass to Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) who waited on the blue line. The sophomore rifled a shot on net, which was initially turned aside by Zilis. The rebound, however, popped onto the stick of Apps, who quickly jammed home the loose puck, giving the Big Green the, 3-2, win.
Piper, who assisted on the overtime tally, recorded her 100th career assist on the day.
With the win, Dartmouth claims the 2006-2007 Ivy League title for their ninth time in program history. The squad wraps up their regular season with a 20-1-1 record in the league. They have never before hit the 20-win mark in league play.
The squad will now have home ice advantage through, at least, the first round of the ECAC playoffs. The Big Green will host Rensselaer in the opening session in a best-of-three series held next weekend at Thompson Arena.
