Penn Shakes off Stubborn Dartmouth Men's Basketball Team, 80-78
HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Leon Pattman (Memphis, Tenn.) led four Dartmouth players in double figures, but the Penn Quakers shook off a stubborn Big Green squad, taking an 80-78 decision in Ivy League action Saturday night.
Trailing 78-75 with 19 seconds left, the Big Green had a chance to force overtime but 3-point attempts - first by Pattman and then by senior Jason Meyer (Covington, Ohio) - were off the mark.
Forced to foul, Dartmouth sent Penn's Steve Danley to the line where he made two, pushing the cushion to 80-75. At the buzzer, Pattman connected on a long-distance trey to account for all the scoring.
Pattman had a strong overall game, leading Dartmouth with 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Also in double figures were sophomore Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) with 14 and sophomore DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) with 11.
Freshman Elgin Fitzgerald (Denver, Colo.) matched his career-high with 12 points, going five-of-six from the floor.
The league-leading Quakers (19-9 overall, 10-1 Ivy) never trailed in the opening half and went to the locker room with a 38-32 advantage.
The Big Green clawed back and took its first lead of the game at 8:34 of the second half when Barnett nailed a jumper to put Dartmouth ahead, 59-58.
Penn's leading scorer with 22 points, Ibrahim Jaaber had some key free throws down the stretch. The senior went three-of-three from the line with 6:18 remaining. That pushed Penn ahead for good, 67-65.
Jaaber knocked down two more for a 75-69 advantage with 1:38 remaining, although Dartmouth trimmed the deficit to two points three times after that.
Dartmouth outrebounded the Quakers, 31-24, while Penn shot slightly better than the Big Green with 57.4 percent to 51.7.
The Big Green goes into the final weekend of the regular season with a 9-16 overall slate, 4-8 Ivy. Dartmouth travels to Columbia on Friday, March 2, and Cornell on Saturday, March 3.
