NEW YORK, N.Y. - A valiant second-half comeback wasn't enough for the Dartmouth men's basketball team as the Columbia Lions held on during the final minutes for a 69-67 victory Friday night.
The Big Green recovered from a 34-23 deficit at halftime, and got within three, 66-63, when sophomore Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) made one of two free throws with 2:21 to go.
But Columbia's John Baumann answered with a basket on the next possession for a 68-63 lead at 1:59, and that proved unsurmountable for the Big Green.
A Leon Pattman (Memphis, Tenn.) layup got Dartmouth back to within three, 68-65, and Columbia's lead went to four when Brett Loscalzo made one of two free throws at 1:07.
Pattman, an 85 percent shooter from the line, drained a pair of free throw attempts for a 69-67 score with 54 seconds left, and both teams missed 3-point shots as the clock wound down.
Pattman finished with a game-high 22 points, including four-of-seven beyond the arc. Barnett had 14, while sophomore Dan Biber (Lorain, Ohio) pitched in with 10. The Big Green matched its season-high with 10 baskets from 3-point territory.
Baumann led Columbia (15-12 overall, 6-7 Ivy) with 19.
Dartmouth (9-17 overall, 4-9 Ivy) closes out the season Saturday night, traveling to Cornell for a 7 p.m. start.
