TAMPA, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team opened up the first day of the Speedline Invitational losing to host South Florida, 2-1, on Friday night at the Greco Complex. USF was a Super Regional team in 2005 and is receiving votes in the latest national polls.
Alyssa Parker led the team going 2-for-3, with pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (1-3) tossing a complete game.
The Big Green (1-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning. With one out Katie Chifcian singled to left field and then moved over after Christy Autin was hit by a pitch. Ashley Gleason singled another, bringing Chifcian home. The Bulls (22-13) evened the score in the fourth. With a runner at first the tying run came across on an RBI double to left center.
In the bottom of the sixth the Bulls scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single. A leadoff walk and a wild pitch moved the runner into scoring position, and pinch runner Meghan Kowall scored off the base hit through the left side.
Trudeau pitched her team out of several jams as the Big Green got the Bulls to strand 10 runners. The sophomore finished with three strikeouts over six innings of work with two earned runs on five hits.
Dartmouth will resume tournament action on Saturday when it takes on Ball State at 2:30 p.m. and Wisconsin at 5 p.m. at the Greco Complex.
