TAMPA, Fla. - The Dartmouth (2-6) softball team split on the second day of the Speedline Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida. The Big Green defeated Ball State, 4-3, in eight innings and then lost to Wisconsin, 6-0.
In the first game of the day against Ball State the two teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Ashley Gleason started things off for the Big Green, reaching on a fielders choice before Leigha Clarkson reached on error. Freshman J.J. Wright came up to knock a two-RBI double to give Dartmouth the lead.
Ball State tied the game in the top of the sixth. Angela Megaw started on the rubber for Dartmouth. The junior struck out the first batter in the inning then gave up two hits before Stephanie Trudeau came on in relief and gave up the hit that allowed the runners to cross the plate.
With the game still knotted at two in the eighth the international tie breaker was put into effect. Ball State was able to get one run across on its trip to the plate. Dartmouth then came up needing to score two. Clarkson was put on second base for Kelly Fry, who singled to score her. Then freshman Christy Autin came up and singled to left field to driving Fry and the winning run home.
Megaw pitched 6 2/3 innings striking out five. Trudeau earned the win while striking out three. Gleason, Autin and Wright all had two hits in the game.
Game Two was all Wisconsin as the Badgers put runs across in the first, fifth and sixth to take a 6-0 win. Trudeau got the loss as the Big Green was only able to get four hits in the game.
