Dartmouth Softball Opens Season with 4-0 Win

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Dartmouth softball team opened the 2007 season with a 4-0 defeat of Georgia Southern on the first day of the Buzz Classic in Atlanta. Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) scored twice with Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) belting two doubles as Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) struck out 10.

The Big Green got its runs across in the first and third innings. In the opening frame, Chifcian reached on a balk and then scored on a perfectly placed double by Fry. A fielding error allowed Fry to cross for the 2-0 lead. In the third Dartmouth scored two more when Chifician reached on a hit by pitch and then scored on another Fry double before the senior co-captain came across on another error for the 4-0 score.

Georgia Southern threatened in the third by loading the bases before Trudeau struck out the next three batters to shut the Eagles down.

Dartmouth's first game of the day against Gardner Webb was postponed as the Big Green had a harrowing journey out of New England. The Big Green and Gardner Webb will instead play tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. before Dartmouth squares off with Boston University at 1:00 and then Iowa at 3:00 p.m.
