AMHERST, Mass. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Massachusetts today at the UMass Softball Complex. The Minutewomen won the first game, 6-0 and took the nightcap, 14-6.
UMass struck first with two runs in the opening inning of Game One. The Minutewomen had runners reach on an infield hit and an error before another Big Green miscue allowed the two on base to come home.
The Big Green had its chances in top of the next inning after Alyssa Parker and Ashley Gleason each came aboard on UMass errors. J.J. Wright had a chance to put some runs on the board but the freshman's laser hit was snagged by Amanda Morin at first.
UMass took a five run lead in the bottom of the fourth. Two doubles to center field brought three runs home for the Minutewomen. Another run for the home team in the fifth inning gave UMass the final score of 6-0.
In the circle for the Minutewomen, Brandice Balschmiter pitched her second career no-hitter. Stephanie Trudeau picked up the loss for the Big Green and is now 3-8 on the season.
The Big Green started the second game off with a leadoff walk to Christy Autin as the freshman then stole second. Nikki Yee singled to right field, moving Autin over. Katie Chifcian was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Parker who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Autin. A hit by Gleason up the middle scored another before Kelly Fry recorded a sac as Dartmouth put three on the board.
The Minutewomen answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Megan Snively continued the hitting for the Big Green in the second with a single to left field. With runners on first and second an error by the UMass second baseman brought Kalli Lemke in moving Autin to third and Yee to second. A lineout by Katie Chifcian ended the inning with the score tied at four.
UMass broke the tie, scoring four as Amanda Acampora plated all runners ahead of her with a triple to give the Minutewomen an 8-4 lead after two. UMass tacked two more on in the third.
With two outs in the fourth the Big Green's Autin singled through the right side in with an flyout moving the freshman to second before an error allowed her to come home making the score, 11-5. In the fifth Leigha Clarkson added another run but it was not enough as the Minutewomen plated three more in the bottom half of the frame to end the game by virtue of the mercy rule.
Angela Megaw took the loss for Dartmouth while Bailey Sanders won the game for UMass.
The Minutewomen improved to 14-12-1 with the wins while Dartmouth fell to 4-15. The Big Green opens up the 2007 home schedule with a full weekend of Ivy League games with a doubleheader against Columbia on Saturday and then Penn on Sunday.
