HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team opened the home portion of its 2007 schedule with a doubleheader against Columbia. The Big Green used a stand-up triple by Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 1-0 victory in the nightcap after Dartmouth won Game One by the same 1-0 score.
The Lions recorded the first hit of the day in Game One with a leadoff double in the second inning followed by a one-out single before Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.), in the circle for the Big Green, struck the final two batters out looking. Another double in the third kept the hits coming for the visitors. A Dartmouth error allowed Keli Leong to reach and move the runners to second and third but a play at the plate on the next batter kept the game scoreless. Trudeau struck out the final batter for her third of the day.
Yee had the Big Green's first hit on a single down the right field line but Dartmouth was unable to bring her across as Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) hit into Columbia's second double play of the day.
A one-out double by Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) in the fifth gave Dartmouth its first real scoring chance. Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) then came up to blast a bouncer down the right field line to bring Gleason home, giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the sixth saw the Lions with two straight errors put Dartmouth runners at first and second but a ground out and two strikeouts stranded the two but the Big Green was able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Trudeau went the complete game for the Big Green, allowing three hits while striking out five. Aimee Kemp took the loss for Columbia allowing three hits with seven strikeouts.
In the second game Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) started things off for Dartmouth with three strikeouts through the first two innings of work. The Big Green got its first runners on in the second inning. An error to Fry as the leadoff, put the senior at first, moving her to second in an infield hit by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.). A walk to Chifcian loaded the bases but a double play ended the inning.
Columbia put its second runner of the day on board in the top of the fourth but Megaw sat the next two batters down for her seventh and eighth strikeouts of the game.
The Big Green put the winning runner across in the bottom of the eighth inning when a two-out walk was issued to Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) before Yee came to the plate and blasted a stand-up triple straight out to center field, bringing Autin home for the game winner.
Megaw pitched the complete game, allowing two hits while striking out a career-high 12. Snyder gave up four hits for the Lions with three strikeouts and two walks.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow with another Ivy League doubleheader against the Penn Quakers. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
