Hanover, N.H. – The visiting Penn Quakers picked up two victories over Dartmouth in softball action this afternoon, combining for 26 hits and 25 runs in the two games.
Penn improves to 14-10 (5-2 Ivy) while Dartmouth falls to 6-17 (2-2 Ivy). Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) led the Big Green attack today, going 5-for-6 on the afternoon.
Penn took game one, 14-0, in five innings. The Quakers wasted little time getting on the board when Stephanie Reichart put down a bunt for a single and capitalized on Annie Kinsey's leadoff double, sending Kinsey home.
The bulk of Penn's scoring took place in the second and third innings. Outfielder Melissa Haffner started the second with a home run for the first of five runs. Dartmouth pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) rallied to get two outs, but a pair of singles by Penn and costly errors by the Big Green brought in two more runs before a two-run shot by Christina Khosravi closed out scoring for the inning, with Penn up, 6-0.
It was more of the same in the third, as the Big Green recorded two quick outs, but Penn rallied to manufacture six runs on six hits before shortstop Molly Chafe (Kennewick, Wash.) snagged Keiko Uraguchi's line drive to end the inning.
Down 12-0 in the third, Dartmouth managed to get a pair of baserunners, but both were left stranded. Penn would score twice more in the contest and the Big Green could not manage a run, posting five hits total for the game.
Kinsey was 4-for-4 in game one, with four runs scored. Dartmouth's Trudeau settled down in the later innings and struck out five Quakers on the day. Emily Denstedt picked up the shutout win for Penn, also earning five strikeouts.
Penn won game two, 11-4, thanks to an explosive eight-run second inning. Each team went three up, three down in the first inning. Dartmouth pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) started the second with a ground out, but would give up six runs before striking out Reichert for out number two. Khosravi cranked her second homer of the day with a runner on board to give Penn an 8-0 lead by the end of the inning.
Fry kicked off a three-hit inning for Dartmouth with a double before a pair of singles by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) allowed her to score. The Big Green's threat continued with runners on second and third, but replacement pitcher Olivia Mauro came in to get three quick outs for Penn.
Fry recorded an RBI double in the third to bring home Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) to make it 8-2, Penn after three complete.
Julia Cheney brought home Reichert for Penn in the top of the fourth and the Big Green's bats were silenced in the bottom of the inning.
Dartmouth's Megaw rallied for a one, two, three inning in the top of the fifth, including one of her three strikeouts on the day. Her teammates supported her with two runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to three runs and a wild pitch.
The sixth inning was quiet for both squads, but Penn managed to put two more on the board in the seventh to go up 11-4. The Big Green was unable to get anything done in the home half of the inning and the Quakers took the victory.
Megaw pitched a complete game for Dartmouth, while three pitchers saw action for Penn. Mauro did the bulk of the work with 3.1 innings pitched and 17 batters faced.
The Big Green returns to action on Wednesday for a double-dip at Providence. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
