HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's and women's track and field teams hold down first place after the first full day of action at the New England Track and Field Championship.
Approximately 35 teams and more than 1000 competitors have traveled to Dartmouth College who is hosting the meet for the first time since 1994.
For the Dartmouth women, senior
Jamila Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) won the hammer with a throw of 172-2 as the Big Green and Williams are tied in the team standings with 20 points. Boston College is just one back with 19.
Dartmouth's strong showing in the hammer was a key as Smith earned 10 points. She was joined by junior
Jessica Long (Lynn, Mass.), who threw 160-11 for sixth place (three points) and sophomore
Emily Daly (Hopkinton, Mass.) with 159-5 for seventh (two points).
Senior
Jadah Chatterton-Richmond (Rochester, N.Y.) earned five points with her fourth place showing in the long jump. She had a mark of 17-11.
Going into Saturday's competition, junior
Cassandre Tanner (Baltimore, Md.) is fourth in the heptathlon, scoring 2,561 points in the first four events. Her time of 15.15 in the 100 hurdles gave her 822 points.
Advancing to the finals were freshman
Natalie Stoll (Portland, Ore.) who was second in the 400 meter trials with 57.12, and junior
Victoria Michelotti (Tampa, Fla.), eighth in the 100 hurdles with 14.81.
Through the first seven events of the men's competition, Dartmouth has 42 points, with Rhode Island in second place with 39 1/2.
Sophomore
Glenn Randall (Collbran, Colo.) won the 10,000 meters in 31:19.74, about 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up. That gave Dartmouth 10 points toward the team total.
Sophomore
Tim Wunderlich (Westminster, Md.) was third in the javelin with 198-5, and sophomore Nicholas Weir (Underhill, Vt.) and classmate
Jonathan Essington (East Orange, N.J.) took third and fourth, respectively, in the decathlon. Weir had 6,048 points while Essington collected 5,783.
Sophomore
Alex Lippai (West Mifflin, Pa.) grabbed third place in the hammer with 179-3.
Dartmouth also had three athletes score in the long jump - freshman
Michael Poppler (Metairie, La.), fifth with 23-0 1/2; junior Randall McKnight (West Windsor, N.J.), sixth with 22-7 1/4; and freshman
Andrew Ching (Calgary, Alta.), eighth with 22-5 3/4. In the pole vault, freshman
Ken DiCairano (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was eighth, clearing 15-0 3/4.
Advancing to Saturday's finals were junior
Brian Evans (Fairfield, Texas) in the 100 meter dash, as well as junior
Charlie Stoebe (Westport, Conn.) and sophomore
Julian Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) in the 400.
