KINGSTON, R.I. - Jess Thomas had 29 kills and 36 digs while her team recorded 146 digs in two matches as Dartmouth (4-2) women's volleyball opened day one of the Rhode Island Ram Classic with a 3-1 victory over the Maine Blackbears (30-27, 28-30, 31-29, 30-26) before falling to the Texas State Bobcats (5-5) in four (30-22, 28-30, 29-31, 25-30).
Hitting .386 in Game One against Maine allowed the Big Green to open the match with a win. The second game had the two teams trading the lead before Maine capitalized late in the game to claim the victory. The third and fourth games were all Dartmouth as the Big Green held off a surging Black Bear team late in the final game. Dartmouth hit .269 in the match while holding the Black Bears to a palty .096 attacking average as Maine finished with 57 kills and 40 errors as a team. Senior katie Hirsch notched a double-double with 22 assists and 18 digs .
The Big Green's second match of the day had them going up against Texas State, winners over host URI earlier in the day.
Despite 76 digs and nine service aces the Big Green were not able to capitalize on several scoring chances as the Bobcats finished the match hitting .283 with two players over .300.
"They were a very athletic team," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "Texas State could easily be one of the best teams we'll see all season. We had our chances but just couldn't close it out. It was a very good volleyball match and we played well."
Dartmouth opened the match with a strong 30-22 win and all the momentum going into the second game. The two teams traded the lead before Texas State took over at 19-16. The Big Green tied it at 27-all and then took the lead on a Thomas kill. A timely timeout by the Bobcats allowed Texas State to score the points needed to take a 30-28 victory. The third game was again point before point as the two teams were tied at 27 before Hirsch led her team to 29 points and the lead but the Bobcats again came back to win. The final game had Texas State proving too much as they won the final game and the match.
Dartmouth continues at the Ram Classic with a 3:00 pm game on Saturday against host URI.
