DURHAM, N.H. -Two touchdowns 1:44 apart early in the third quarter broke open a close contest and propelled the University of New Hampshire to a 52-31 victory over Dartmouth Saturday.
With the Wildcats leading, 31-17, at halftime, UNH (2-1) quickly pushed the lead to 45-17 with 10:14 remaining in the third period. Keith LeVan caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Ricky Santos at 11:58, and then Santos added a five-yard TD run for the cushion.
UNH was a quick strike team for most of the game and opened the in-state rivalry when Mike Boyle went 91 yards on the opening kick. The Wildcats then forced Dartmouth into an interception on the next series and capitalized about two minutes later when Boyle added a three-yard score for a 14-0 lead.
Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens talked about the difficulty of coming back from UNH's early lead. "Offensively, they are as impressive offensively as any team I've seen," said Teevens. "Spotting them 14 points early certainly didn't help our cause. But from that point offensively, we tried to stay consistent and do our job. Defensively, we knew they were going to push things the field and we wanted to tackle well.
"By and large we did that," said Teevens. "They had to work for most of their drives."
However, Dartmouth (0-2) responded when fullback Julian Collins (Tinton Falls, N.J.) completed an option pass to wide receiver Philip Galligan (Moraga, Calif.) from 12 yards out to make it 14-7 with 7:05 left in the first.
In the second period, the Big Green added a seven-yard TD pass from quarterback Tom Bennewitz (Weston, Conn.) to wide receiver Eric Paul (The Woodlands, Texas) and a 32-yard field goal by Andrew Kempler (Westport, Conn.), trailing by just two touchdowns at the break.
In the third quarter for Dartmouth, tight end Mark Brogna (Pleasanton, Calif.) hauled in a four-yard pass from Bennewitz, before tight end Brett Lowe (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) caught a nine-yard TD toss from quarterback Alex Jenny (Wayland, Mass.).
The starting quarterback, Bennewitz completed 14 of 27 passes for 106 yards as six different players completed passes for the Big Green's flashy offense. Paul led the receivers with six catches for 45 yards, while linebacker Justin Cottrell (Somers Point, N.J.) spearheaded the defense with 13 tackles.
Dartmouth heads into Ivy League action next week, hosting Penn on September 29 in a 12:30 start at Memorial Field.
