Hanover, N.H.- The Dartmouth men's soccer team continued with the late-game dramatics as sophomore Ben Salmon (Auburn, Wash.) took center stage, scoring with just under six minutes remaining to give the Green a 1-0 win over Vermont.
With its fifth shutout of the season, the Big Green won its fifth straight and remains unbeaten in its last seven games. Dartmouth moved to 6-1-1 with the win while Vermont fell to 3-7.
Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) was tremendous between the pipes again for the Big Green, making four saves including three impressive stops in the second half to preserve the win.
The Catamounts came out strong in the first half and kept the Big Green attack at bay, forcing Dartmouth to play in the midfield with them. The squads managed just five total shots, with the Big Green taking three to the Cats' two.
Vermont had a perfect chance to take an early lead when Matt Hennessey drew a foul in the Dartmouth box, resulting in a penalty kick attempt for the Catamounts in the 22nd minute. Panos Georgiadis stepped up to take the PK and Milligan read him perfectly, diving right to make the save.
The momentum from that save carried the Big Green into halftime with the score still at 0-0.
Dartmouth turned up the heat in the second half, holding an 11-6 advantage in shots, but Vermont's attempts were all quality efforts.
Just when it seemed the teams were destined for overtime, Salmon came up big, scoring his first collegiate goal. The Big Green earned a corner kick in the 85th minute and senior forward Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.) stepped in. Ordonez sent a great cross into the box where junior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) slowed the ball with a header before Salmon hammered it home with a header of his own to give the Green a 1-0 lead at 84:22.
The Catamounts could not manage to score the equalizer in the final five minutes and Dartmouth took the 1-0 victory.
Vermont's Tom Critz had two saves in goal while Tyler Hasman led the offense with three shots. Henderson took three shots to lead Dartmouth's attack.
The Big Green heads to instate rival New Hampshire on Weds. Oct. 3 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
