HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth men's basketball roared past the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in an 86-62 victory Wednesday night in Leede Arena.
Dartmouth started the game strongly, as jumpers from junior Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio), freshman John Marciano (Roselle Park, N.J.), and junior DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) put six points on the board before UMES could respond. A jumper and two free throws from the Fighting Hawks put the score at 6-4.
This would prove to be the smallest margin of the game, as the Big Green then began to walk away. With eight minutes to play, a jump shot from Mosley put Dartmouth ahead 29-14. Although the Green could not quite maintain its 15-point lead in the first half, it entered halftime up by 12, 37-25.
In the first half, Barnett and Mosley led the Big Green in scoring with nine points apiece, including a crowd-pleasing alley-oop from Sanders to Barnett.
A three-pointer by UMES' Josh Bright to start the second half further shrank Dartmouth's lead to nine points, but a breakaway lay-up by Mosley and a three-point shot from Barnett put the Green back on track.
As the second half started, Dartmouth struggled to break free, as the Hawks held the Green's lead. However, starting with a slam dunk by junior Kurt Graeber (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), Dartmouth went on a 10 point run, culminating in consecutive three-pointers from Barnett and Mosley. With 12:56 to play, Dartmouth had extended its lead to 18 points.
Dartmouth would only continue to pull away from UMES, as its lead stretched even farther. A three-pointer from sophomore Robby Pride (Denver, Colo.) put the Big Green up by 26, the largest margin of the game, with 14 seconds to play. However, a foul then sent UMES to the line, making two final free throws to set the final score at 86-62.
At the final buzzer, no fewer than four Dartmouth players had scored 10 points or more in the game. Alex Barnett was the high scorer of the game, putting 21 points on the board, while DeVon Mosley put up 16 points of his own in addition to a game-high eight rebounds. Robby Pride finished the game with 11 points, and captain Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) put up 10.
In addition, the Big Green successfully shut down the Hawks' star player Ed Tyson. Tyson, with a season average of 18 points per game prior to today, was shut out in the first half, and only made nine points in the second.
Dartmouth players also showed tremendous teamwork in making 23 total assists to UMES' eight.
As the Big Green enters Ivy competition, they will face Princeton next Friday, Feb. 1 in the first of four games on the road.
