PRINCETON, N.J. ? Dartmouth men's basketball suffered a 57-53 loss when it took on the Princeton Tigers in Jadwin Gym on Friday, Feb. 1.
After a basket by the Tigers, junior DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) started things off for the Big Green with a foul shot. Junior Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio) followed with a lay-up of his own, his first of four field goals in the first half.
The game continued at a slow pace, as the first media timeout arrived at 15:51 with the score 4-3 Princeton. The Tigers gradually pulled away, however, gaining a nine-point lead with nine minutes to play, the score 19-10.
In answer to Princeton's lead, Dartmouth proceeded to go on a scoring run, as 10 unanswered points from the Big Green put them up 20-19 with 5:48 to play.
As the first half drew to a close, Dartmouth and Princeton traded the lead before Princeton drew another five-point lead. However, a lay-up and foul shot from sophomore Robby Pride (Denver, Colo.) in the final seconds of the first half put the Big Green back within two of the Tigers.
Dartmouth entered halftime trailing 30-28, with junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) leading the Big Green with a game-high 11 points.
The second half began with Dartmouth and Princeton continuing to trade off the lead, as The Big Green pulled ahead by three only to have the Tigers come back and hold the lead, 39-38. A jumper by Pride and a lay-up from Barnett after pulling down his own rebound put the Green back up by 3, 42-39 with 10:01 to play.
Despite another three points from Barnett, Princeton was once again able to gain the lead, 51-45. With 2:31 left to play, the Big Green was down by six and working to close the gap with time running out. Although Princeton's numerous fouls put Dartmouth at double bonus, the Big Green was not able to take advantage of its free throw opportunities.
With less than a minute remaining, Dartmouth's only shot was to take its chances with sending the Tigers to the foul line. Unfortunately, Princeton went 4-for-4 from the line, and despite a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Sanders, Princeton walked away with the win, 57-53.
At the final buzzer, Alex Barnett had put in a dominant performance on the floor, with a game-high 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Marlon Sanders also finished with 15 points of his own, but his performance and Barnett's were not enough to give the Big Green the win.
Dartmouth will travel to Penn tomorrow to take on the Quakers at 7:00 pm.
