HANOVER, N.H ? Dartmouth senior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) made his presence felt all day and delivered the game-winner in the Big Green's 1-0 victory over Yale.
It was a classic, physical Ivy battle between the Bulldogs and the Big Green but Dartmouth came out on top to remain undefeated in conference play, improving to 6-3-1 overall, 1-0-1 Ivy. Yale dropped to 4-5-1, 0-2 Ivy.
The Big Green pressured the Bulldogs from the start, making significant runs into the Yale half throughout the first. Dartmouth's first threat came in the seventh minute when Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) drew a foul on the left side and sent the ensuing free kick into the box. Henderson was there for a well-timed header but sent the ball just high.
Yale mounted an immediate counterattack after the goal kick and just missed in the box before committing a foul. Dartmouth kept at it and once again it was Henderson with a flashy play in the box. After the ball had bounced around from head to head, he picked it off the ground, flipped it up to himself and fired in mid-air but Travis Chulick made an impressive point-blank save.
The Bulldogs attacked midway through the half and Brad Rose headed the ball with a clear shot at the goal but Dartmouth back Donnie Surdoval (Sparta, N.J.) came blazing in to head it right back out.
The teams battled in midfield for most of the half though Dartmouth had another big opportunity in the 42nd minute after Olsen sent in a corner kick that was headed back and forth in the box. Surdoval eventually turned and fired a shot that was blocked by the defense and cleared out.
For the half, Dartmouth held a slight, 6-4, shot advantage.
Dartmouth freshman Lucky Mkosana (Bulwayo, Zimbabwe) got things started in the second half with a solo breakaway and a one-on-one with Chulick who made a point-blank save. The Big Green attacked Yale's defense relentlessly and the Bulldogs struggled to make much happen other than a few breakaways after clearing the ball out of their defensive end. In the 65th minute, Henderson drew a foul just outside the box after a breakaway and Mkosna stepped up for the free kick but fired right into the Yale wall.
The Big Green finally broke through in the 75th minute after drawing another free kick in Yale territory. Olsen stepped up on the far left side from 30 yards out and sent in a ball that could have been a goal in its own right. For good measure, however, a diving Henderson header found the back of the net and the Big Green took a 1-0 lead.
Yale's Aden Farina-Henry was poised for the equalizer in the 81st minute when he fired but Derek Stenquist (Hudson, Mass.) blocked it.
Dartmouth finished with 12 shots to Yale's six. Chulick made five saves in goal while Dartmouth keeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) had one.
Dartmouth is back in action this Wendesday, Oct. 15 when it travels to fellow Northeast power UConn for a 7:00 p.m. start.
