Storrs, Conn. - 2007 Hermann Trophy winner O'Brian White scored two goals to lead #20 UConn to a 2-1 victory over the Dartmouth men's soccer team this evening.
The two New England powers duked it out for 90 minutes, with Dartmouth holding a slight advantage in shots, 14-13, and the Big Green had six shots on goal to the Huskies four. UConn improved to 23-16-5 all-time against Dartmouth.
White, whose offensive production is down from last year's 23 goal performance with just six on the season now, scored once in each half to secure the win for UConn. The Big Green drops top 6-4-1 overall and remains winless in true road games while the Huskies improved to 6-3-4 on the season.
The Big Green nearly got on the board with a sequence of two shots by Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) that were saved by UConn's Josh Ford in the 14th and 16th minutes. Ultimately, UConn opened up the scoring in the 17th minute with White's first tally of the day off assists from Akeem Priestly and Tony Cascio.
Dartmouth evened things up just four minutes later at 21:49 when junior back Donnie Surdoval (Sparta, N.J.) nailed a header off a corner kick from sophomore Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) for his second goal of the season.
The Huskies closed the half aggressively pursuing the Big Green's goal, but senior Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) and the backline held tight for a 1-1 tie at the half.
The Big Green came out strong in the second, earning a series of four corner kicks and two quality shots from 57:20 to 60:56, but it could not break past Ford. Olsen pushed the tempo and kept the Huskies' defenders on their heels throughout with a pair of shots and his booming corner kicks.
Ultimately, it was Cascio and White connecting again that did the Big Green in. Cascio passed the ball from the right side of the box to White who buries a shot high to make it 2-1, UConn at 73:46. Dartmouth pushed for the rest of the game, but was unable to get the equalizer.
Ford finished a solid evening with five saves while Milligan made two.
Dartmouth is back in action this Saturday when it hosts Penn at 7:00 p.m. on Homecoming.
