HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team defeated Columbia on Friday to win its second Ivy League match in a row. Freshman Madeline Baird was stellar for her team, recording a double-double with 16 kills and a game-high 20 digs. Baird led both sides in hitting with a .417 average. The Big Green won the first set, 25-17 before the Lions came back to take the second, 25-21 but Dartmouth held on in sets three and four, 25-20 and 25-14 for the 3-1 victory.
Columbia took the quick lead in the first set before a Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) got her team on the board. Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) helped serve her team to a tie with Columbia as the two sides exchanged the lead for the next couple of points. Kills by Baird and a block by Jes Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) and Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) gave the Big Green a 15-11 lead before Columbia took a timeout. The Lions came out of the break to score the next three points before Dartmouth decided to use a timeout. Thomas came out to help serve her team to a three point lead as Houston won the game for the home team on a huge kill.
Set Two had the two sides trading the lead back and forth before the Big Green was able to eek out a three-point lead. The score again went back and forth before the Lions went ahead, 12-9. Columbia maintained the lead and led by as much as seven before Dartmouth came storming back and pulled to within two at 20-22. A Columbia timeout helped the visitors regroup as the Lions came back and scored the next three points to take the win.
Dartmouth took the early lead in the third set going up 7-3 before Columbia took a timeout. The Lions came back and tied the match at eight before taking the lead. A solo block by Johnson helped her team take the lead as Dartmouth went up 19-14 enroute to a 25-20 win.
In the final set neither side was able to get the early advantage before Covington and Krista Merchat (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded a huge block that helped the Big Green to a 7-3 lead. After a Columbia timeout Dartmouth won the next three points before the Lions had to take another break. The Big Green continued to control the set enroute to a 25-14 win.
With the victory Dartmouth moved to 6-9 overall, 2-3 in the league while Columbia falls to 5-9, 0-5 Ivy. Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) was also in double-digit kills with 10 while adding 12 digs. Johnson was tops for both sides with four total blocks as the Big Green outblocked the Lions, 13-8.
