FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Lauren Strickler (Akron, Ohio) shot a seven-over 79 to end the first round of the Sacred Heart Classic in a tie for third, helping Dartmouth finish the day in fourth place at the nine-team event. The Big Green shot 340 (+52) as a team, 22 strokes behind the leader and host Sacred Heart, which had three of the only six golfers -- including Strickler -- to break 80 in the round. The Pioneers' Joanne Martorana led the field with a 76 (+4).
Brown shot a 330 (+42) to end the day in second place, with Boston University five strokes behind the Bears in third with a 335 (+47).
Playing in her hometown, sophomore Katie Gulemi (Fairfield, Conn.) joined Strickler among the top 10 golfers with an 83 (+11) to tie for ninth. Freshman Kathleen Quirk (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for 17th with her 86, while fellow rookies Marietta Smith (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and Heather Roland (Newtown Square, Pa.) tied for 30th at 92.
Dartmouth will try to move its way up the leaderboard in the final round tomorrow morning.
