HANOVER, N.H. ? Five men and women who have played an integral part in the growth and success of Dartmouth Athletics have been selected for induction as honorary “Wearers of the Green” at the college's signature athletics recognition event next spring. In celebration of their selection, the five individuals will be honored, along with more than 100 other Wearers of the Green inductees, during halftime of the Dartmouth-Harvard football game on Nov. 1 in Hanover.
Wearers of the Green are named every five years, with a formal celebration and induction of national, international, and Ivy League champions; All-Americans; Olympians; and other high-level competitors from among Dartmouth's varsity and club sports. The next Wearers of the Green celebration will be held in Boston on May 16, 2009.
The five honorary Wearers are:
? President James Wright '64A and wife, Susan DeBevoise Wright '69A
? Douglas C. Floren '63
? John Engelman '68
? Kathy Slattery Phillips
“These five individuals embody the spirit of Dartmouth Athletics,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Josie Harper. “Their contributions and support are at the core of our belief in athletics as an integral part of the Dartmouth experience.”
In 1994, the designation of selected Dartmouth alumni, coaches, and others as honorary Wearers of the Green was established. According to the selection criteria, honorary Wearers of the Green must demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of the role of athletics in the Ivy League and at Dartmouth College; make exceptionally generous contributions of time or financial resources that have made a significant impact on the college's athletic programs; and show a long-time commitment to a broad-based, equitable and high-quality program for Dartmouth's student-athletes.
President and Mrs. Wright have long been ardent supporters of Big Green athletics, regularly attending games and contests all year long. Under Wright's presidency, Dartmouth has invested more than $80 million in athletic facilities upgrades, including a range of new facilities such as the Fitness Center in Alumni Gymnasium, Burnham Soccer Field, Floren Varsity House, and renovations to Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, scheduled for completion next spring. President Wright has also served on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and on the NCAA Task Force on Reform. He will step down next spring after 11 years in the presidency. Mrs. Wright has also been instrumental in the lives of Dartmouth's student-athletes, serving in a number of roles in her Dartmouth career as an advisor to students.
Floren, who captained the Big Green tennis team as an undergraduate, has supported a number of significant athletics facilities including the Floren Varsity House and the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion. He and his family have supported a number of other initiatives at the college as well, including an endowed fellowship in the biological sciences to encourage recently tenured faculty to promote curricular innovation and effective teaching, and an endowment in biological sciences to help underwrite the costs of student research projects. As a volunteer, Floren has served on the Leadership Committee during the Campaign for Dartmouth, his Reunion Giving Committee, and was a class agent for seven years.
Engelman has served the college in a variety of roles inside and outside athletics. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Dartmouth Athletic Sponsor Program for 15 years, and as its Alumni Coordinator for the past nine, during which time the program has raised more than $2.85 million to support the recruiting efforts of Dartmouth coaches. Engelman is a significant contributor to the Athletic Sponsor Program and six different Friends Groups; he has established a named fund within the Dartmouth Athletics Endowment, and he has made naming gifts to the Floren Varsity House, Boss Tennis Center and Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse projects. He has also served on the Athletics Committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, has held numerous positions for his class, and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Association of Alumni. He is also the longtime advisor to the Alpha Delta fraternity.
Phillips served for 30 years in Dartmouth's Sports Information office, including the past 24 years as director, promoting the on- and off-field achievements of generations of Big Green athletes. An award-winning writer, photographer and editor, she played an important role in the integration of women's athletics into Dartmouth's proud history in the 1970s. Phillips died unexpectedly in November 2007, at the age of 55. She was honored posthumously in September by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, with the ECAC's Commissioner's Award, presented for meritorious service to the ECAC or an ECAC member institution by demonstrating “significant accomplishment in his or her chosen professional field.”
