Two Unanswered Scores Gives Big Green Tie with Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. ? The third-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team was able to fight back with two unanswered scores to earn a 2-2 tie at Clarkson after the Golden Knights had a two-goal lead at the conclusion of the first period.

For Dartmouth (5-1-1, 4-1-1 ECAC Hockey), junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) netted her second of the season and first since the season opener at Princeton. She got the scoring started for the Big Green with a power play goal in the second period. Senior co-captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) gave Dartmouth the tie with her second of the season coming with 55 seconds remaining in the final frame.

Senior Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) finished the evening with 30 saves, including 15 in the second period to keep the Big Green within striking distance. Clemis also did it on the offensive end with her first collegiate assist coming on the Parsons goal.

For Clarkson (4-5-3, 2-1-1 ECAC Hockey), Melissa Waldie led the charge with a goal and assist, while Brittany Mulligan added the second goal for the Golden Knights in the first period. Goaltender Lauren Dahm was not challenged by the Big Green early on in the game as she only had to make seven saves, but in the third she preserved the tie for Clarkson with 16 stops in the last 25 minutes, including overtime.

The Knights got on the scoreboard first late in the opening stanza, when junior Britney Selina attempted a wrap-around shot from behind the net. Selina's shot didn't get past Clemis, but the rebound found the stick of senior Courtney O'Connor, who sent a pass across the crease to Waldie for the opening goal of the game, her second in as many nights, at 13:08.

Clarkson scored another goal in the first period late in the frame. With just 1:31 remaining, Mulligan picked up her first collegiate goal when she deflected the puck past Clemis to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Assists went to Waldie and Kimberly McKenney

The Knights owned an overwhelming 27-8 advantage in shots through the first two periods, including a 15-5 edge in the second period, but it was the Big Green who would score the only goal of the second. With only 12 seconds remaining on the power play, Parsons came in along the right circle, performed a toe drag, and used a pretty backhand to end Dahm's extensive shutout streak. Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) and Clemis each were awarded assists.

The third period saw the Big Green pick up their play, as Dartmouth out shot Clarkson 11-5, and the effort was rewarded with a last-minute goal to send the game to overtime. A turnover on an attempted clear gave Dartmouth an advantage near the blue line and the Big Green took advantage as Bowman tied the game up with a wrist shot from the slot. The goal, which had assists going to sophomore Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.), came with only 54.5 seconds left in the contest.

In overtime, it was all Dartmouth from a standpoint of the scoreboard as the Big Green owned a 6-0 lead in shots and ended the game on the power play. However, Clarkson killed the chance and the teams had to settle for a 2-2 tie.

Dartmouth salvaged one point during the weekend after falling to St. Lawrence last night. The Big Green will be back in action this coming weekend as Dartmouth hosts Cornell and Colgate at Thompson Arena.
