HAMILTON, N.Y. - With a power play goal by Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) early in the second period the fourth-ranked Dartmouth power play unit helped the Big Green men's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Colgate as Dartmouth has now won five games straight. Big Green netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) earned his first collegiate shutout making 28 saves.
The victory improves the Big Green to 5-2 overall, 5-1 in the ECAC while the Raiders fell to 4-3-1, 1-3-1 in the league.
A power play chance early in the third period got the Big Green on the board as Estoclet buried a rebound to give his team a 1-0 lead. Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) took the first shot from the right side circle. Long saved the puck to his left as Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) was there to put another shot on Long as the puck bounced out to a waiting Estoclet.
Dartmouth pressured early in the contest with a 5-on-3 midway through the opening stanza but Colgate netminder Charles Long was up to the task. The Raiders had a shorthanded shot that rang off the post as neither side was able to get much going early in the game.
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) and Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) tried to team up for the Big Green's first goal as Fleming brought the puck down passing to Pritchard who fell just before the net but was still able to get his stick out to shoot the puck at Long's legs.
The two sides went into the first break scoreless as the home team had managed seven shots to Dartmouth's four.
Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had two straight shots on net during a power play opportunity but a save and a pipe prevented the freshman from getting his team on the board midway through the second period.
A flurry of shots by Colgate at the 12:00 minute mark had O'Neill standing on his head as the freshman came up big, saving every one.
A hitting from behind call to the Big Green with seven minutes left in the second gave the Raiders a five minute power play opportunity but an aggressive penalty killing unit by Dartmouth kept Colgate off the board as the two again took a scoreless tie to the locker room.
Two saved shots by Jones with 10:00 minutes left showed Dartmouth still pressuring as the Big Green looked to add an insurance goal. Long came out of the net with :26 left in the game but Dartmouth was able to hold on for the win.
Long finished with 22 saves.
The Big Green will continue with its swing through New York with a 7:00 pm tilt against Cornell on Saturday night in Lynah Rink.
