HANOVER, N.H. - With :38 left in regulation, #5/6 Boston College's Brian Gibbons netted a controversial goal that tied the contest at 1-1 as the Eagles eventually went on to defeat the Dartmouth men's hockey team in overtime, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Thompson Arena.
With goalie John Muse out of the net a scrum in front of the Dartmouth goal, as the seconds ticked down in the third period, allowed Gibbons to roof the puck over netminder Jody O'Neill's (Nepean, Ont.) head. The game was then stopped for several minutes as the play was reviewed to determine if it was the puck or a piece of broken stick that flew into the net. The goal was allowed to stand as the two headed into overtime.
With 1:14 left in the extra frame Barry Almeida potted the game winner as the defending national champions won the contest and improved to 10-4-1 on the season. The loss gave the Big Green a split on the weekend as #20 Dartmouth fell to 6-4.
Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) and Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) combined for the Big Green's lone goal at 7:32 of the second period as Dartmouth took the lead. Estoclet got the puck on a turnover at BC's blue line as he skated forward and dangled the puck back to a waiting Jones who fired it over goalie Muse's left shoulder.
Early in the contest both sides had chances to score as Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) took a shot that grazed the outside of the crossbar but skimmed out. Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) came right back with a shot that went just to the side of Muse's skates.
The Eagles had its own chance to jump on the board earlier in the game when Benn Ferriero on the power play went one-on-one with O'Neill but the puck glanced off the top of the net.
O'Neill finished with 38 saves while Muse had 22.
Dartmouth is now off until coming back to host its own tournament on Dec. 28 and 29 in Thompson Arena. The Big Green will welcome Army, UMass and Bemidji State to Hanover.
