Ithaca, N.Y. ? The Dartmouth women's soccer team bombarded Cornell with 39 shots tonight and survived a late Big Red comeback to win 3-2 in overtime.
Cornell (2-12-1, 1-6-1 Ivy) tied the game with just nine seconds left on the clock in regulation but Dartmouth senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) took care of business in overtime, scoring her third game-winner of the year in the 96th minute.
The Big Green closes out the 2008 campaign at 8-6-2, 2-4-1 Ivy. Tonight marked Dartmouth's fifth overtime game of the season and it remained unbeaten in extra time, going 3-0-2 on the year.
Dartmouth wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Poskin raced down the left side and sent a cross into Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.), who hammered home a goal in just the third minute of play. The Big Green maintained control throughout the first half, ultimately outshooting the Big Red, 17-4 for the period.
The Big Green added to its lead in the 34th minute when a pair of Californian backs connected on a set piece to make it 2-0. Junior Thea Sutton (San Rafael, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate point with the assist on Sarah Bromley's (La Jolla, Calif.) goal after a corner kick.
It was more of the same in the second half as Dartmouth continued to control the pace of play. The Big Green kept Cornell goalkeeper Jodi Palmer on her heels from the first minute, firing in 18 shots and forcing her to make six saves.
Just when it seemed Dartmouth was headed home with a shutout, Cornell came storming back late in the game. The Big Red took five of its 10 shots in the half in the final 10 minutes and it resulted in two goals for the home team. Lena Russomango sent a cross into the box in the 81st minute and Brook Chang was there for the header to put Cornell on the board.
Dartmouth regrouped and counterattacked including a late shot by Tata that the Big Red defense had to clear out. Cornell came tearing back down the field in the final minute and it was Russomango finding a teammate for a header again. This time Eva Dixon connected and scored the game-tying goal at 89:51, with just nine seconds left in regulation.
The Big Green headed to overtime and for the fifth time this season refused to give in defensively. Dartmouth broke through in the 97th minute when Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) sent a cross in for Poskin, who beat Palmer one-on-one to win the game. It was the second time this season that Poskin scored an overtime winner assisted by Sack.
For the game, Dartmouth held a commanding 39-15 shot advantage. Rookie Anna Chinco (Sacramento, Calif.) made her first collegiate start in goal, making two saves. Classmate Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) relieved her off the bench and stopped three shots. Palmer made 13 saves to keep the Big Red in the game.
Bromley, Sack, Whitney Odden (Bozeman, Mont.) and Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) all went the distance with 97 minutes played for the Big Green.
Dartmouth ends the 2008 campaign at 8-6-2, 2-4-1 Ivy.
