Philadelphia - The Dartmouth women's basketball team earned a much-needed Ivy League
victory over Penn tonight, 62-47, this evening at the Palestra.
Junior forward Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.)
led the Big Green with a season high 13 points. She was joined in double
figures by Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) with 12 points and eight rebounds and five assists
and rookie Brittney Smith (Fort Worth,
Texas) with 12 points.
Dartmouth
moves to 9-14 overall, 6-3 Ivy while Penn falls to 4-19, 1-7 Ivy.
The Big Green was on fire in the first half, shooing 50 percent
from the floor including four trifectas en route to a 35-21 halftime lead. The
35 points ? scored by seven different players ? tied Dartmouth's second-highest first half tally
of the season.
After the teams traded buckets early, Dartmouth built a modest 13-11 lead at11:19.
Then the Big Green got down to business. Sophomore Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas)
hit her first collegiate three at 10:54 to jumpstart an 18-3 run during the
next eight minutes, inflating the lead to 31-14 at 3:03 with a Craft triple.
Kelly Scott snapped a six minute Penn scoring drought at 2:14 and her team had
a 7-4 scoring advantage in the last two minutes to take it to 35-21, Dartmouth at the break.
Dartmouth
opened the second half on a 6-0 run to build a 41-21 lead, its largest of the
game at 16:35. Penn did not get on the scoreboard in the period until Kim Adams
hit a three at 15:47 to cut it to 41-24.
The Quakers fought back and cut the Dartmouth lead to 10 points, down 43-33 at
13:00 after a conventional three-point play by Caitlin Slover. The Big Green
responded with a 5-0 run to rebuild the lead to 48-33 and never looked back.
Dartmouth's
defense frustrated Penn all night and through the end of the game, forcing 22
turnovers though the Quakers shot an improved 45 percent from the floor in the
second half. The Big Green hit 43.4
percent of its shots on the night while committing just nine turnovers for the
second-straight game.
The Big Green is back in action tomorrow night when it faces
the Tigers at Princeton at 6:00 p.m.
