HAMILTON, N.Y. ? Senior captain
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) potted two goals in a 5-2 win over Colgate on Saturday in Starr Rink, helping his team wrap up the regular season with a win. Sophomore defenseman
Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) had a collegiate first with two points.
Four minutes into the first Johnson had a chance to get his team on the board with a shot that hit the pipe and one that went wide.
Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) had his own shot on net as the Big Green pressured Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich early on.
With seven to go in the frame three shots on net by the Raiders had Dartmouth goalie
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) going from side to side, making athletic kick save after athletic kick save.
Colgate outshot Dartmouth, 14-to-9 as the two teams remained scoreless at the first break.
The Big Green broke through at 17:10 of the second period. As Dartmouth was skating 5-on-3,
Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) and
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) passed between the circles eventually shooting down to Johnson for the score.
Francois Brisebois answered two minutes later on a breakaway that got between Devine's legs for the equalizer.
Another power play goal by Johnson gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) and
Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) both got shots on Dekanich during a scrum in front of the net. With Johnson on his knees the senior was able to sneak the puck across the line.
The Raiders continued to outshoot Dartmouth and led 26-20 at the end of two but it was the Big Green that held the lead on the scoreboard.
Boldt put his team ahead, 3-1 at 14:23 of the third period with his first collegiate strike.
Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) brought the puck down passing to
Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) who put a shot on Dekanich on the right side of the cage. Boldt was there for the rebound putting it behind the netminder on the left side before the goalie could get back.
Jon Wolter (Branford, Conn.) also lit the lamp for the first time of his career at 5:04 with a power play goal that gave the Big Green a 4-1 lead. That goal chased Dekanich from the net as Justin Kowalkoski came on in relief. Gillam and Boldt were both credited with helpers.
With under two minutes to play in the game and Dartmouth on the power play Stephens took a shot from the point that hit the post as Reeds got the rebound passing behind to Grecu for the goal. The Raiders answered with a goal by Ben Campaner but it was not enough as the Big Green held on for a 5-2 win.
Dartmouth will now have to travel back to Ithaca and a rematch with Cornell in the first round of the ECAC playoffs that begin next weekend.
