CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team opened up play at the USF Under Armour Classic. The Big Green dropped its first game, 2-0, to UT-Chattanooga before taking on Penn State.
Dartmouth got behind early to UTC but singles by Kirsten Costello (Windsor,
N.Y.) in the third, Leigha Clarkson (Perris,
Calif.) in the fifth and Christy Autin (Harwood Heights,
Ill.) in the sixth all gave the Big Green chances to put one across. Dartmouth's best chance came in the sixth when Autin led off with an infield single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.). A wild pitch sent Autin to third as she was the first Big Green player to get past second base. Unfortunately two strikeouts ended the inning as Autin was stranded at third.
Moks pitcher Brooke Loudermilk appeared to get the best of Dartmouth as she recorded 14 strikeouts on the day. Big Green pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) struck out two UTC batters.
Rain had been steady off and on throughout the day but as Dartmouth and Penn State began play the rain became heavy at times. Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) was the Big Green's pitcher of choice for the second game. She made things difficult on her self early on by allowing the bases three runners but she struck out the next two to get herself out of the inning.
Through two innings the Big Green had been unable to record a hit or get a runner on as the Lions came up to bat in the bottom of the second. An error got the first runner on before a single and one out walk juiced the bases. It was then the umpires halted the game. The two teams will begin at that time in the game tomorrow morning.
